THE FIX FOR WINTER SKIN WOES
How to Update Your Skin Care Ritual for the Season
By Wendy Ohrbach
As winter’s chilly temps take hold, you’ll likely see unwelcome changes in your skin. Cold, windy weather paired with harsh indoor heating and holiday stress can leave skin parched, while making fine lines and pores more visible. Set on outsmarting Father Winter this year, I asked for skin care help from Dr. Hongjie Cao, JAFRA’s royal jelly expert and Chief Scientific Officer.

Cold winter air generally has a lower humidity level, which can have a snowball effect on skin. Dr. Cao explains, “Water loss from evaporation weakens skin’s barrier function, which leads to more moisture loss. This creates a cycle that impairs skin’s defense system.”
If you’re like me, great skin is always on your wish list. Drinking plenty of water and getting beauty rest will help, but there’s more you can do. Here are Dr. Cao’s top tips for keeping your complexion merry and bright all season.
TIP #1: RETHINK YOUR CLEANSER
In winter, skin may become fragile and require extra gentle care. Opt for mild cleansers that remove impurities without stripping. Look for ingredients that have conditioning properties, such as Royal Jelly RJX, as well as ingredients that help retain moisture, such as hyaluronic acid.
TIP #2: LAYER ON THE MOISTURE
Dry winter air leaves skin craving hydration that helps preserve natural protective oils. Enhance your skin care routine with a hydrating serum or face mask that is designed to lock in moisture.
And, if you’re using a lightweight moisturizing lotion, switch to a richer cream formula.
TIP #3: NEVER SKIMP ON SPF PRODUCTS
Cloudy winter day? The sun’s rays still get through, and clouds can sometimes even increase UV intensity. Snow, with its highly reflective surface, is another cause for concern. Damage from the sun is proven to contribute to skin aging as well as uneven tone, so broad spectrum sunscreen is essential in every season.
