Get Smart About Sun Care

5 Sunscreen Myths, Debunked!

You’re ready with the perfect swimsuit, cutest cover-up and a calendar full of pool parties, picnics and barbecues. But, if you’re like most people, you’re forgetting the most important outdoor fun essential: sunscreen.
Even with all the data about the dangers of sun damage, most people do not wear sunscreen regularly. As Senior Director of JAFRA’s Worldwide Marketing for Skin Care and Toiletries, I’m on a mission to help you get smart about sun protection. Here are the top 5 sunscreen myths, debunked!
Myth: Sunscreen is just for fair-skinned people
FALSE! Wearing sunscreen is the most important anti-aging step for people of ALL skin tones. Melanin in skin offers some natural protection, but everyone should use sunscreen when they’re spending time outside. Sun damage can lead to hyperpigmentation and melasma as well as premature signs of aging such as wrinkles, sagging and dark spots. In fact, a whopping 90% of skin aging comes from the sun.* The good news is that sun damage is preventable.
TIP: Use JAFRA Sun to protect your skin against both UVA aging rays and UVB burning rays. It’s got you covered with Broad Spectrum SPF 50 and SPF 50+. Plus, it’s water-resistant, sweat-resistant and reef-friendly.

Myth: Clouds act as nature’s sunscreen
FALSE! The sun’s UV rays are present even on cloudy or overcast days. That means that you need sun protection in every season and every type of weather. For short-term sun exposure such as commuting to work, makeup or skin care products with SPF may provide enough protection. For extended time outdoors, choose high-performance sunscreen that is broad spectrum and water-resistant.
TIP: Put your best face forward with JAFRA Sun Face Protector Sunscreen and Tinted Face Protector Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50+. Made with Color Match Technology, our Tinted Face Protector blends with your skin tone and blurs imperfections for a sheer, natural look.
Myth: Sunscreen makes skin feel greasy
FALSE! Heavy, greasy sunscreen is so last century. JAFRA Sun is designed for lightweight, nongreasy comfort. Our sunscreens glide on smoothly and blend in easily, without a sticky feel or white cast. They’re oil-free, formulated to not clog pores and infused with botanical moisturizers to keep skin feeling soft. It’s skin-loving sunscreen with a light, tropical scent that smells like paradise!
TIP: Want the convenience of a spray for outdoor sports and family fun? JAFRA Sun Spray On Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is easy to apply (even on kids!) and dries quickly.
Myth: Sunscreen should be applied at the beach or pool
FALSE! For maximum protection, sunscreen should be applied before leaving your house. It takes an average of 15 minutes for sunscreen to soak into skin and work effectively. If you apply sunscreen at home, your skin will be protected during the drive to your destination and while setting up for your outdoor activities. Plus, you’re more likely to do a thorough job. If you wait until you’re at the beach, you might feel rushed and miss important parts such as the tops of your feet, back of your neck and tops of your ears.
TIP: Be sure to re-apply sunscreen every two hours and after spending time in the water.
Myth: A little sunscreen goes a long way
FALSE! You need more sunscreen than you realize. For the body, the recommended amount is about one ounce. Think of it as two golf ball-sized dollops, one for above the waist and one for below. For the face and neck, the standard recommendation is about ½ teaspoon or a nickel-sized amount. Squeeze onto the palm of your hand, then massage into skin until absorbed.
TIP: Practice safe sun by using JAFRA Sun sunscreen on all exposed skin, plus wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
Feel like a sun care expert now? I hope you’ll take these tips to heart, and practice safe sun care year-round. Remember, JAFRA Sun is skin-loving, family-friendly sunscreen that is free from octinoxate, oxybenzone, phthalates and parabens. Cheers to a safe and happy summer!
