Beauty Solutions: Lip Know-How

Do you long for a plumper pout? Try these needle-free alternatives

It’s time for another Beauty Solution! This is the part of the blog where we tackle the common beauty problems that many of us and tell you how to fix them, so your beauty routine gets a little easier with every article.

Question: How can I get fuller lips?
A nice full pout has always been a coveted look for some, but injections aren’t the only way!

Lip plumping glosses and serums that stimulate blood circulation in the lips can work wonders, but be careful; some of them are pretty intense. Test it first in a small area and wait a few minutes to make sure it doesn’t irritate your skin or cause you any discomfort.

There are also lip-lining techniques that can give you the appearance of a more prominent pucker. Try lining just outside of your natural lip line with our Lip Definer Lip Liner and then fill in with a matching lip color to turn things up a bit, no needles needed.

Beauty and the Beach

Hit the beach with your beauty essentials in-toe

One of the best parts of summertime is being able to have fun at the beach, whether you’re  at home or on vacation. Feeling the warm sun embrace your body, listening to the waves and feeling sand between your toes is essential to a relaxing summer. However, your beauty regimen needs to adjust to the beach; not only do you want to feel pretty, but it is vital to protect your face, body and hair from the effects of the sun and ocean. Here are some tips to feel like a beach babe:

Beach Body
Let’s face it- at the beach you will most likely be wearing a bathing suit; which means you need to get your body ready to be seen! The night before going to the beach, exfoliate your skin with a body brush (one to try is JAFRA’s Face and Body Cleansing System, which comes with a specific body brush), to remove dull and dry skin.  Follow with a body oil and moisturizer to make your skin smooth and soft. Thirty minutes before hitting the beach, apply a full spectrum sunscreen (such as JAFRA’s Body Protector Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50) all over your body. Each hour while you are at the beach, remember to reapply sun protection, especially if you swim in the ocean.  Après-beach refresh your skin with a lotion such as JAFRA’s Cooling After-Sun Lotion, which contains aloe and shea butter, ingredients proven to soothe the skin.

Beach Hair
Relaxing at the beach means being easy breezy, especially when it comes to your hair. The sun and ocean can not only make your tresses dry and brittle, but these elements can also fade your color if you get highlights or color your hair. If your hair is long, consider braiding it for a trendy and super functional look! You can also wet your hair and slick it back with a hair oil for a moisture treatment while you play. Of course, a wide-brimmed hat is another option to look chic while also being protected.

Glowing, Healthy Makeup
Get your face beach ready by applying an antioxidant serum under your sunscreen; the antioxidants will give your skin a defense boost against the effects of the sun. Next, a high SPF sunscreen is a must; one to try is JAFRA’s Face Protector Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50. Even out your complexion with a CC, or Complexion Corrector Cream that will give you lightweight coverage and will be easy to reapply. Waterproof mascara will open up your eyes without the risk of smearing off and a slick of a moisturizing lip gloss, such as JAFRA’s High Shine Moisture Gloss, will give your lips a sun-kissed glimmer.

Summer Slow Down

Don’t give into the heat. Try these powerful motivators!

There’s a reason the ancient Greek saying, “the dog days of summer” persists. Ancient Greeks thought the longest, hottest part of summer brought not only high temperatures, but also fever, lethargy and bad luck. In modern times, we’ve ditched the fever and bad luck, but most of us still agree that high temps and lethargy go together. But hey, there’s good news: you don’t have to give in! We’ve got four winning strategies that are guaranteed to help keep you motivated no matter the weather.
1. Get an Accountability Buddy
Set a realistic goal this summer then get your friend involved. That’s right; share your goals and keep track of each another’s progress. If you’re really nerdy, break out the spreadsheets and start logging your friend’s progress, and have your friend log your progress. Meet weekly to discuss what you’re doing. It’s amazing how many times you’ll get to the gym, how many new clients you’ll contact or how quickly you’ll get the closet cleaned when you’ve told somebody you’re going to do it.
2. Ask Yourself, “Why?”
Is your motivation flagging for your heart-felt goal? It’s time to probe deeper. You have to ask yourself why you want to accomplish the goal. Do you want to lose 10 pounds? Well, why? What is losing weight going to do for your life? Keep asking until you get to the emotional core of the goal. If the answer makes you tear up, you’re there. Knowing your higher purpose (AKA your why) clarifies your intentions, which is generally more motivating than wanting to do something, but having little or no clarity on what accomplishing the goal will do for your mental or physical well-being.
3. Create a Dream Board
Write your goal in the center of the board. Now cut out pictures, make drawings or use words and other meaningful graphics pertaining to your goal. Be positive! Put the dream board near your bathroom mirror or your workspace. Each day, take a moment to look at this positive visual reminder of your goal. Some people say a dream board is magical, attracting what you want to your life.  Maybe, but it may also be that when your goal is right in front of your eyes, it’s hard to slack off.
4. Try a New Technique
If you have a long, arduous task, such as producing a major report, studying for an exam or cleaning out your in-law’s entire house, don’t just try to grind it out. Instead, use the Pomodoro Technique. The idea is that humans function best when they focus in 25 minute chunks and take breaks often. In a nutshell, here’s what you do:
  1. Pick a task you need to accomplish.
  2. Set a timer for 25 minutes and start working
  3. When the timer rings, take a 5-minute break
  4. Repeat above steps up to three times. Every fourth time, take a 25-minute break.
Dog days, be damned. Try these motivators and you’re sure to have the most productive summer yet.

Beauty Solutions: Curl Class

Question: How should I curl my hair?
Crave-worthy curls got you all worked up? Don’t worry! Here are a few different techniques to achieve the coiled tresses you desire.

Braids – Braids are a fast, easy way to get a quick curl. Braid your hair into even sections (2 or more, depending on how thick your hair is) and clamp your flat iron down for five seconds on each section of the braid, working your way down. Repeat on the other braid(s). To finish, take the braids out and rake through using your fingers. Don’t brush!

“S” Waves - Nicci Welsh’s now infamous S wave method is another way to get some speedy spirals. Instead of using the flat iron in an up-and-down motion, push a 1 to 2-inch section of your hair into an "S" shape and give it a quick tap with a flat iron to set it. Alternate directions all the way down that section of hair and repeat as desired. This technique gives you more control over the location and size of your curls.

Wrap Curls – For a standard flat iron curl, start with roughly dried hair, combing out any tangles with your fingers. Next, wrap a one-inch section of hair around the top plate of the flat iron, wrapping it away from your face. Gently ease your straightener down the lengths of the strand, and release, stopping about two inches before the ends, leaving them uncurled. Repeat. For loose texture, do a few hair flips and shake out your new waves.

Heat-Free Curling – Not into the hot? No sweat! There are tons of heat-free curling options out there. Braiding your hair while it’s damp and letting it set overnight works well and you can use braids of different styles and sizes to get different looks. You can also wrap your hair around baby wipes in small sections for tighter curls. You can even spritz the wipes with water and use them again. Get softer ringlets by placing a headband around your head and twisting your hair up and around the headband. The smaller the sections, the tighter your curls will be. Just keep the headband on for a few hours and you’re good to go.
