3 Morning Rituals for Alpha Women

Start your day off like the woman you were born to be

Being an alpha woman -- the boss lady, if you will -- requires a lifestyle that supports full-throttle engagement with your work and world. Guess what? It starts from the moment you open your eyes. Are you a, “I’m not a morning person” person? Try our three AM rituals and we guarantee you’ll get there.
1. Get Out of Bed!
The National Sleep Foundation says we need 7 to9 hours of shut eye each night to be as healthy and productive as possible, so get to bed! But once you’re there and you’re done, c’mon… get up. Get up early, in fact. We recommend at least 30 minutes earlier than usual. That means no more snooze button. Getting up early is essential to all of the other steps that follow. It also sets the tone for your life. You’re not a hapless victim of circumstances, no ma’am; you’re in charge and ahead of the game from the very start. See how relaxing and boss-like that feels?
2. Feed Your Brain
Nope, not by reading social media posts or the news, though those aren’t bad ideas for later. First, fortify your mind and soul by meditating. It’s the secret super power of boss ladies such as Eva Mendes, Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry. Just take 10 minutes, sit quietly, close your eyes and focus on your breath. That’s meditation. If you want to get fancier, try an app like Simply Being or Headspace. You’ll feel more focused and in control for the entire day. For extra power, take five additional minutes to journal. Either write down your goals for the day (make them realistic and achievable), or do a “Best Possible Self” exercise. Imagine if you were living the absolute ideal life right now. What would that look like? Take a couple of minutes to describe it in detail. This will give you a mood boost and focus your mind on your loftiest ambitions.
3. Feed Your Body
Most Americans get a paltry one serving of vegetables and fruit a day, says Seattle-based nutritionist Angel Planells, MS, RDN, CD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. For optimum mental and physical performance, you should get five. In the AM, too many women rush out the door without eating anything. So, what’s our solution? Drink something and make it plant intensive (a win-win). One of Oprah’s favorite life coaches Martha Beck recommends this vegetable-heavy smoothie in her book, Finding Your Way in a Wild New World.
Gorilla Smoothie
  • 2 cups fruit juice
  • 1 cup ice
  • handful of raw baby spinach leaves
  • 1 tangerine
  • handful of mixed field greens
  • 4 strawberries
  • handful of lettuce
  • 1/3 of a banana
  • handful of wheat grass
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • 3 baby carrots
Directions: Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Drink up!
