Look Fab in Your Jeans!

Find the right fit for your body type

Jeans are one of the most comfortable and easy wardrobe items to wear that can be dressed up or down, and have even been accepted into the corporate world! The key, however, to looking and feeling amazing in your jeans is the shape and fit. Here is a quick guide to finding the best jeans for your body type:

Know your jean vocabulary
When you start to try on jeans, it is important to know the different cuts and styles. The first is “rise”; that is the distance from the seam at the middle of your legs to the top of the waist band. The most common are low-rise (fit lower on your hips), mid-rise and high-rise (fit above the waist). Other common cuts are boot-cut (fitted through leg with slight flare at ankle), skinny (fitted straight from thigh to ankle) and flare (fitted at thigh and wide at ankle).

Ample behind or nothing behind
If your best asset is your booty, find a way to show it off and still being classy. Try a high-waist jean in a dark denim wash. The high waist will pull all of your “assets” in and cover your prized possession, while the dark denim will have a slimming effect. Also look for jeans that have little to no embellishments on the back pockets so your bottom doesn’t look larger than life. The opposite holds for women with a flat derriere; look for styles that have pronounced pocket flaps or adornments that give the illusion of curves.

Thick thighs and hips
If you carry more weight in your thighs and hips, a hip, retro style flare jean is your best option. Look for a jean that fits snug on your hips and thighs and flares out below your knee; creating an illusion of length and balanced proportions.

Petite or Tall
Petite women can get lost in jeans that have too much fabric, so look for dark denim jeans that go all the way to bottom of your ankle (for a lengthening effect); no matter the cut. If you must hem your jeans, be sure to use the same color thread so the hem looks seamless. Tall women should look for jeans that come in longer leg sizes (Old Navy has a variety of styles); a mid-rise can make a long waist look in proportion as well.

Muffin top and tummy
For women that want to camouflage a muffin-top or a protruding tummy, dark denim jeans with a mid-rise and control panel are the best choice. You can try jeans from NYDJ or Levis Perfect Slimming Jeans, both have tummy concealing panels built into the front. These jeans also tend to fit about the “muffin top,” hence slimming your figure.

Plus size women look fabulous in dark denim, mid-rise, boot-cut jeans. Look for jeans that have a lot of stretch in them to hug your curves, yet move with you during the day. While wide leg jeans might seem comfortable, they might not be the most flattering. You can also look haute in skinny jeans, but the same rules apply: dark wash, stretchy fabric, mid-rise; and best paired with a blazer or cardigan.
