Healthy for the Holidays

How to eat, drink and be merry, in a healthy way

The focus of many winter celebrations are the delightful high-calorie foods we share with family and friends. Some of us just go for it and indulge in festive feasting and worry about the effects later, while others stress over every single bite. Consider a happy medium with these healthier holiday food strategies.

Food Game Plan
Just because you’re trying to be party health-conscious, doesn’t mean you have to go hungry. Have a food plan prepared before each event. An hour before your gathering, have a healthy snack; a handful of almonds, a bowl of greens or an apple, to curb your appetite. Saving yourself for the party will only leave you hungry and vulnerable to unintentional binging. You can apply the same snack prep rules to any traditions or celebrations that restrict eating for a certain amount of time.

Analyze Your Options
Survey the table before filling your plate and make a B-line for salads, veggies and proteins. Pass on the gravy and other sauces and keep track of your starches; they stack up fast on those holiday buffets. If you can’t help yourself, pick the foods you’ve been looking forward to all year. Totally worth the calories…in moderation, of course. If you’ve opted out of desserts entirely, make it easier on yourself by bringing along your own teabags. Sipping a tasty cup of hot peppermint, ginger spice, or cinnamon tea is a zero-calorie alternative to sweets and after dinner drinks.

Pass On The Spirits
Alcoholic beverages are full of calories. Look up the nutritional details of your favorite cocktails before you go out in case you want to find a more calorie conscious option. Fun Fact: Mixed drinks tend to have more calories than wine or champagne. If you don’t drink, or choose to forgo drinking, consider sparkling water instead of a soft drink. Order it with a splash of pomegranate or cranberry juice and a lime. Mock cocktails, or mocktails as they’re so fabulously called, are satisfying and just as festive!

Thanks, But No Thanks
You may feel obligated to partake in high-calorie homemade favorites around the holidays for fear of insulting a coworker or family member. Instead of giving into politeness and taking everyone up on their offers, know that it’s okay to just say, “No, thank you.” If you still feel guilty, mention that it’s hard to turn down such a delicious offer, but you’re being mindful of your holiday intake. ;)

Keep Exercising
It’s easy to abandon your exercise routine during the holidays. Be sure to schedule a regular time to break a sweat or it may slip to the bottom of your to-do list. After a holiday meal grab a friend or relative to take a walk with you, even if it’s just around the block. It will help you burn a few calories and keep your energy up.

Enjoy your family and friends and have a healthy and happy holiday season!

What to Wear: Fall 2017

New looks and Fashion Week inspiration to cozy up to for autumn.

It’s autumn and that means there’s a chill in the air and an urge to update your closet. Unlike its predecessor summer, which forces us to strip down to the bare essentials to endure the stifling heat, this season’s falling temperatures and hot apple cider vibe beg for cozy coats, sexy boots and never-ending layers. Keep reading and see the must haves for your new fall wardrobe.

Knee High Boots
A classic cure-all with transformative power. Slipping into a knee high boot, or an even higher over-the-knee boot, has a way of making you feel confident enough to take on anything fall tosses your way. Over-the-knee stiletto style boots were all over the Fashion Week runways, and celebs like Gigi Hadid and the Kardashian camp have been spotted in them since September.

Fall Florals
If you remember the nineties, you remember that flowy, floral dresses were everything. Well, they’re back again, filling fashionista closets from Paris to Milan. Darker, moodier florals are particularly on trend this season. Pair yours with a moto jacket and boots and you’re good as gold…or should we say, grunge?

Knits and Velvet
This year, rather than a simple cashmere sweater and jeans, why not mix it up? Flowing, velvet palazzo-style pants are everywhere, offering the rare opportunity to be both comfortable and chic. Sweater skirts and dresses in a variety of styles allow you to be warm and cozy from head to toe with a fashion game that’s on point.

Statement Sweats
Last, but certainly not least, the athleisure trend lounges on. You may feel laid back and lazy in your matching sweats (preferably in pastels), but add a pair of booties and a statement bag and - voila! Sunday brunch has never looked so fashion-forward or felt so good.

See what JAFRA favorites have caught Colby’s eye this fall

We put Colby in the hot seat and asked her about some of her favorite ways to feel beautiful in this fall.

1. Now that fall is here, what’s your favorite skincare product to keep you feeling soft and cozy?
My skin is naturally super dry, so when colder months come around, my skin is in desperate need of something that gives me more moisture. My favorite JAFRA product to combat the elements is Royal Jelly Global Longevity Crème. I love it all year long, but especially in the fall & winter months when my skin needs some extra TLC.

2. Name your favorite product in this month’s Color Look, Smokin’ Hot.
This is a toughie, but I’d have to say my fave would probably be the Full Coverage Lipstick in Haute Pink. Nothing makes me feel more fuego than a bold lip!

3. What fall nail color trends are you into right now? Alternative neutrals, like greys and matte beiges, or moody purples and deep navys?
I’m a sucker for neutral nails all year long, but in the fall, I like to move into more comforting and sultry shades like deep greys, greens and beiges.

4. Pick a trend! Two-toned eyeshadow or two-toned lips?
Two-toned lips for sure! Lips are such a fun place to play and experiment.

5. What’s your biggest skin care problem when the weather gets cool and how do you tackle it?
My biggest skincare problem in colder months is dry, flaky skin. The best thing I can do to prevent it from happening is to be sure to exfoliate weekly and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

6. It’s almost time to shop and celebrate! What’s your go-to giftable for the holiday season?
Shopping for the holidays is something I look forward to every year…although, I’m sure my wallet doesn’t agree. ;) My go-to gift for everyone from colleagues to dinner hosts and hostesses, is a great candle. Easy, simple and everyone loves a good candle, and I can always add a JAFRA Fragrance in to sweeten the deal and look like the best guest ever!
